New : My (hopefully) weekly Unity3D news and thoughts

Dear diary. Hmm. No. But : I try to do a weekly series of, well, news and thoughts about, around and for Unity3D and stuff for it.

Unity 2020.1 is out. A lot of neat new features. Like editing Prefabs inside a level. Heres a two minute video from them showing some of(f) the new things.

Now let me talk a bit about some assets I recommend or at least use them myself or will use them myself.

The following are free as in beer. Wait. No. Well, they are free as in freeform ? Freedom ? Yes. That. :

Gameplay Ingredients

That is an awesome collections of scripts and functions made by peeweek. From timers, to enhanced callbacks, to really useful looking editor enhancements. (Folders in the hierarchy ! 😀 ) Just have a look at it. I will use this one for sure in one way or another. ( GitHub Link )

NaughtyAttributes

A collection of useful attributes for your inspector, realized through custom property drawers, made by dbrizov. ( GitHub Link )

Also I did not know of this (nmp-driven) infrastructure for open-source assets : OpenUPM (Open Source Unity Package Registry). Still beta, but interesting. ( Link ). At least it really takes time off browsing GitHub for open-source assets.

Then there are the ones where you have to get some coins out of your pocket.

Odin

It is not cheap. But I realy like it. I bought it in the last big sale and even I am still using only a fraction of its functionality, it is so good. It makes one wonder why these things like better grouping of Lists, just to name one example are not standard in Unity3D. But also the attributes it adds makes the life so much easier. Doozy UI

Also not cheap. Bought it in a Humble Bundle. But : Even it is rather made for fast developing mobile games, or so it seems at least, I use it for making main menus. It has a beautiful state display where you see life whats going on with the UI. For me it makes a lot of cryptic UI source unnecessary. Also its animation and blending capabilities are amazing, combined with sound. Ok, I use a lot of it through scripting, and even if that is not its purpose, it really helps me to have my mind on other things. ( Asset Store Link )
